Melanie Sivley, OD, FAAO

Melanie Sivley, OD, FAAO, earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Auburn University and her Doctorate in Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She is a therapeutically-certified optometrist and specializes in optical correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia, with glasses and contact lenses, diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders including glaucoma, dry eye, infections and injuries, and clinical management of refractive and cataract surgeries.

Dr. Sivley is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, an active member of the American Optometric Association, and Associate Professor of Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She holds licenses to practice optometry in Alabama, North Carolina and Florida, and conducts research on rare genetic diseases that affect the eye. She lectures at national and international meetings on these conditions and her most recent article was published in May 2017 in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

In 2015, Dr. Sivley was honored for her achievements and selected as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and Distinguished Practitioner of the National Optometry Academy. She and her husband have six children and three grandchildren, and are active members of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Gardendale.
