Dr. Holcomb has a full general/surgical ophthalmology practice in Cullman, AL, which he has operated with Gary Few, OD since 1994. He performs cataract surgery with multifocal and astigmatic (toric) lens implants along with other surgical procedures through his Cullman office.

William E. Holcomb, MD

Dr. Holcomb is a board certified ophthalmic surgeon. He obtained his B.A. at the University of Mississippi, graduating summa cum laude. He then completed his medical school training at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, gaining membership in the AOA medical honor society and graduating cum laude. After a one year medical internship at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, he completed a three year ophthalmic residency at the Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham, where he served as Chief Resident. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1991, the same year in which he began performing refractive surgery. He established a cataract and refractive surgery practice in Cullman in 1994 and opened Holcomb Laser Center in 1999.

Dr. Holcomb takes great care to deliver the best possible results for his patients.

After beginning RK in 1991, Dr. Holcomb moved on to PRK with the excimer laser at Carraway in 1997, then at the Eye Foundation Hospital in 1998. He underwent extensive LASIK training at Emory Vision Center in Atlanta, Georgia, performing his first LASIK cases there in 1999. During his career he has performed thousands of refractive procedures.

Dr. Holcomb is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS). He currently serves on the Board of the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology (ALOA). He has lectured at the annual AAO meetings, and recently served two years as Chief of Staff at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He and his wife Barbara have three children: William, Mandy, and Bobby.

Dr. Gary Few

Dr. Few is a graduate of the College of Charleston in 1986. He received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1991 from The University of Alabama -Birmingham. Dr. Few joined our practice in 1998.

Dr. Few and his wife, Jeannie, have two children, Alex and Natalie.

Professionally, Dr. Few has served as President of the UAB School of Optometry Alumni Association. He has also served on the Education Committee for the Alabama Optometric Association. In 2000, Dr. Few was honored with The Young Optometrist of the Year award by The Alabama Optometric Association.

Dr. Melanie Sivley

Dr. Melanie Sivley earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Auburn University in 1987 and her doctorate in optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1991. She is a therapeutically certified optometrist with 26 years of practice experience and specializes in:
  • Optical correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia with glasses and contact lenses
  • Diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders including glaucoma, dry eye, infections and injuries
  • Clinical management of refractive and cataract surgeries
Dr. Sivley is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, an active member of the American Optometric Association, and Associate Professor of Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She holds licenses to practice therapeutic optometry in Alabama, North Carolina and Florida, and conducts research on rare genetic diseases that affect the eye. She lectures at national and international meetings on these conditions and her most recent article was published in May 2017 in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. In 2015, Dr. Sivley was honored for her achievements and selected as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and Distinguished Practitioner of the National Optometry Academy. She and her husband, Bobby, have six children and three grandchildren, and are active members of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Gardendale.

Katrina Heath, COE - Practice Administrator. She has worked with Dr. Holcomb for over 18 years. She is a Certified Ophthalmic Executive and also certified on the Wavescan, Intralase & Visx. Katrina, her husband and both her children have had Lasik performed by Dr. Holcomb. They have been enjoying their corrected vision since 1999.

Sonya - Check-In/Insurance Verification.  She has been with us, greeting patients since 2006.

Debra - Check-Out/Scheduling.  Debra joined our team in 2015.

Savanha - Surgery Coordinator.  She enjoys helping our patients scheduling procedures since 2013.

Shelia - Medical Records & Scheduling.  We are pleased Shelia joined us in 2018

Elysha, COA –  Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, Certified Operating Room Technician, assisting Dr. Holcomb in surgery since 2007. She is also certified on Wavescan, Intralase, and VISX Laser.

Brittney, COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, trained and certified on Wavescan, Intralase, and VISX Laser.  She joined Dr. Holcomb's practice in 1999.

Janet, COT - Certified Ophthalmic Technician trained and certified on Wavescan and Intralase. She joined Dr. Holcomb's practice in 2005.  Dr. Holcomb has performed Lasik on 3 of her children.

Lynn, COT - Certified Ophthalmic Technician trained and certified on Wavescan and Intralase.  She has recently moved back to the area and rejoined the practice.  We are happy for Lynn's return.

Vicki, OSC - Ophthalmic Assistant and Dr. Holcomb's personal certified scribe. She fills the role of Surgery Recovery Instructor. She has worked with Dr. Holcomb since 1994.
